A high-ranking Mexican senator from the ruling Morena party surrendered to federal authorities in San Diego, facing charges that he conspired with one of the most violent drug cartels to flood American communities with deadly fentanyl and narcotics in exchange for bribes and political protection.
Cartel-Connected Politician Faces Federal Charges
Enrique Inzunza Cazarez, 53, a senator representing Sinaloa state, turned himself in to the Drug Enforcement Administration after being named in a massive federal indictment unsealed by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York on April 29. The charges include narcotics importation conspiracy, possession of machine guns and destructive devices, and conspiracy to possess the same. Prosecutors allege Inzunza Cazarez was one of 10 current and former Sinaloa officials who conspired with the notorious Sinaloa Cartel to import drugs into the United States.
Direct Links to Los Chapitos Operations
According to the 34-page superseding indictment, Inzunza Cazarez met directly with leaders of Los Chapitos, the Sinaloa Cartel faction controlled by the sons of imprisoned drug lord Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman. During these meetings, prosecutors say the senator agreed to specific plans for the Sinaloa state government to support and protect cartel operations in exchange for favors that helped corrupt officials maintain power. The indictment alleges Inzunza Cazarez and businessman Enrique Diaz Vega, who previously served as the state’s Secretary of Administration and Finance, acted as middlemen between El Chapo’s sons and Governor Rocha Moya.
Federal Warning to Corrupt Officials Worldwide
U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton delivered a stern warning about the investigation’s broader implications. He stated that drug trafficking organizations cannot operate as freely or successfully without corrupt politicians and law enforcement officials on their payroll. Clayton emphasized that the support of corrupt foreign officials for deadly drug trafficking must end, sending a clear message to officials around the globe who work with narco-traffickers that no title or position will protect them from prosecution.
Installing Dishonest Officials to Protect Drug Operations
Federal prosecutors describe a systematic effort by Inzunza Cazarez and his co-conspirators to install dishonest officials throughout the Sinaloa state government specifically to protect Los Chapitos drug trafficking operations. Diaz Vega, who surrendered to authorities in Arizona on Friday, allegedly worked alongside the senator in this scheme. The Department of Justice characterized their actions as creating a protective infrastructure that allowed the cartel faction to operate with impunity while flooding American communities with dangerous drugs including fentanyl, which has become the leading cause of death for Americans aged 18 to 45.
