Florida’s House passed a redistricting map that could add four Republican seats to Congress, despite a floor disruption by Democratic Representative Angie Nixon, who used a pink bullhorn to protest the vote. The map passed 83-28 in the House and 21-17 in the Senate before heading to Governor Ron DeSantis for his signature.
Chaos on the House Floor
Nixon, dressed in a hot-pink outfit and wielding a matching bullhorn, repeatedly shouted accusations that the redistricting violated the Constitution as lawmakers voted. The commotion created enough confusion that two Democratic representatives, Allison Tant and Marie Woodson, accidentally cast affirmative votes. Both later requested their votes be changed, with Woodson stating she mistook the disruption for a quorum call. Despite the chaos, the bill passed overwhelmingly along party lines, with only one Republican voting against it.
The new congressional map redraws Florida’s 28 districts to reflect the state’s continued shift toward Republican voters. The changes target four Democrat-held seats, potentially moving Florida’s congressional delegation from 20 Republicans and 8 Democrats to as many as 24 Republicans and 4 Democrats. Democrats immediately accused Republicans of gerrymandering and promised legal challenges, claiming the map violates Florida’s Fair Districts amendments.

Political Implications and Background
Nixon characterized the redistricting as an illegal mid-decade power grab designed to benefit President Donald Trump. She called it a disrespect to Florida voters and promised continued resistance. Republican lawmakers defended the map as a reflection of Florida’s demographic and political reality, pointing to strong conservative governance, economic growth, and migration from other states as driving factors in the state’s political transformation.
Pattern of Protest
This marks the second time Nixon has staged a floor demonstration over redistricting. She participated in a sit-in protest during the 2022 redistricting battle and is currently running for the United States Senate. Republicans pointed to similar redistricting efforts by Democrats in Virginia, questioning the selective outrage. The new map represents a major victory for Florida Republicans as the state solidifies its position as one of the most reliably conservative states in the nation. Once DeSantis signs the legislation, the changes will take effect for the 2026 midterm elections.

Wondering what’s wrong in the country, Politicians! Time for a reset. JMO
The democrats have such an unpopular massage they have to use a bull horn to try and sell it to the voters!
It is hard to believe that the Florida house would allow a member to disrupt the business of the Florida House, without some type of retribution for accountability of enforcement for disruption of procedures.
