New Jersey Democrats demand the USPS defy President Trump’s executive order on mail-in ballots, igniting a fierce clash over federal power and election integrity that could disenfranchise millions or expose fraud—depending on whose truth you trust.
Trump Signs Executive Order Targeting Mail-In Ballots
President Trump signed the executive order on March 31, 2026, directing federal agencies including USPS to compile verified citizen voter lists. USPS must cross-check mail-in ballots against these lists, apply tracking barcodes, and limit delivery to confirmed eligible voters. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick called it essential for safe, secure ballots. Trump described the measures as foolproof against fraud. This targets 2026 midterms where mail voting aids seniors and military personnel.
New Jersey Democrats Fire Back with Direct USPS Demand
Rep. Nellie Pou (D-NJ-09) led the April 6, 2026, letter signed by NJ’s congressional delegation including Sens. Cory Booker and Andy Kim, plus Reps. Donald Norcross, Herb Conaway, Josh Gottheimer, Frank Pallone Jr., Rob Menendez, LaMonica McIver, and Bonnie Watson Coleman. They ordered Postmaster General David Steiner to refuse implementation, reaffirm USPS neutrality, coordinate with states, and report to Congress. NJ highlights its strict labeling and 2022 Voter Protection Initiative as proven safeguards.
USPS Neutrality Under Siege
USPS updated election policies last year to affirm its role as neutral carrier, rejecting any gatekeeping in elections. Spokesperson Cathy Purcell confirmed ongoing review of the order as of April 8, 2026. Democrats argue federal mandates violate state election laws and Article I, Section 4, which grants states and Congress authority. Common sense aligns with constitutional limits on presidential power; Trump’s order stretches executive reach into state domains without evidence of widespread issues.
Historical precedents reinforce this: 2020 lawsuits alleging fraud failed in courts. Noncitizen voting remains rare, per verified data. NJ election officials defend their decades-old secure systems. Power dynamics pit executive ambition against state primacy and congressional oversight of USPS funding.
Lawsuits and Stakeholder Motivations Emerge
Democrats and voting rights groups prepare lawsuits deeming the order unconstitutional. NJ joins a state coalition challenging it. Trump allies view cross-checks as vital fraud-proofing after 2020 expansions amid COVID-19. Democrats cite risks to vulnerable groups: seniors, disabled, working families, military. Verified Voting’s Pamela Smith labels it a structural inversion—USPS delivers mail, does not verify voters.
Short-term risks include mail delays and disenfranchisement; long-term, it could redefine federal-state roles if upheld. Political divides sharpen pre-midterms. Economic threats loom via potential fund cuts to non-compliant states.
Conservative Perspective on Election Security vs. Overreach
Facts show mail-in voting surged in 2020 with unproven fraud claims fueling GOP reforms. Trump’s order addresses real concerns like rare noncitizen incidents through federal lists—practical common sense for integrity. Democrats’ resistance protects state control, aligning with Constitution, but dismisses security needs. Courts will decide; USPS neutrality demands rejection of partisan impositions. American values favor secure, accessible elections without federal bullying states.

Just why are the democrats so dead set against weeding out fraudulent ballots?! What have they been doing for all these years that we need to know about? They have all but admitted to being the party of cheaters and fraudsters!!!!!
USPS is paid to deliver material to the specified address. A customer can purchase additional ralated services. “Filtering” and “vetting” are not among such services. Transactions, of US Mail, are between sender, USPS, and recipient. In case of election ballots, US Gov’t is none of these. Sorry, Mr. Pres.
