First Lady Melania Trump publicly condemned ABC and late-night host Jimmy Kimmel after he made an assassination joke about President Donald Trump during his show, calling her an “expectant widow.” The remark came just days before an actual assassination attempt at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner left the First Lady visibly shaken.
Kimmel’s Controversial Monologue
During Thursday’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” broadcast, the comedian presented a mock White House Correspondents’ Dinner speech that included the assassination reference. Kimmel told viewers the First Lady had “a glow like an expectant widow,” while also targeting Trump’s children and senior officials with inflammatory remarks. ABC previously suspended Kimmel last September after he falsely blamed Trump supporters for the assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk. The network has faced mounting criticism for repeatedly allowing similar content.
The late-night host also called Deputy White House Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, who is Jewish, “Baby Hitler” and made additional derogatory comments about the administration. Kimmel continued with personal attacks on Melania Trump’s documentary and family life, creating what critics describe as a pattern of escalating hostility toward the First Family.
Real Assassination Attempt Follows
Days after Kimmel’s monologue aired, a 31-year-old teacher attempted to assassinate President Trump at the actual White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington. Viral images captured the First Lady’s frightened reaction as gunshots rang out in the Washington Hilton ballroom where she sat beside the President. The suspect, previously recognized as a mild-mannered educator, allegedly acted after consuming inflammatory political rhetoric from multiple media sources.
First Lady Responds
Melania Trump issued a statement condemning Kimmel’s rhetoric as dangerous and divisive. She wrote that his words are “corrosive and deepen the political sickness within America,” adding that “people like Kimmel shouldn’t have the opportunity to enter our homes each evening to spread hate.” The First Lady challenged ABC executives to take responsibility, stating Kimmel “hides behind ABC because he knows the network will keep running cover to protect him.” She concluded with a direct appeal: “Enough is enough. It is time for ABC to take a stand.”
