Kamala Harris’ own husband reportedly does not want her to run for president again, and most of her former staff do not think she will anyway.

Quick Take

  • Doug Emhoff privately told people he would rather Harris skip a 2028 run, according to a Wall Street Journal report.
  • Five of eight former Harris aides and advisers think she won’t run, an Axios survey found.
  • Angry Democratic donors from her 2024 loss are now eyeing Governors Wes Moore and Gavin Newsom instead.
  • Harris says she has not decided, but keeps campaigning and raising money like someone who plans to.

Husband Reportedly Wants Her To Sit This One Out

Doug Emhoff told people close to him that he would prefer Kamala Harris not run for president in 2028, the Wall Street Journal reported. The New York Post summarized the account on October 10, describing a man who watched his wife lose badly in 2024 and does not want a repeat. The report does not include a direct quote from Emhoff himself, only secondhand accounts of private conversations.

Some people close to Emhoff reportedly believe he would still back whatever Harris decides, even if he personally hopes she passes. That detail matters. It means this is not a public rebellion from the former second gentleman, but a quiet preference shared behind closed doors and leaked to reporters.

Former Aides Are Betting Against Her

Axios asked eight former Harris aides and advisers on September 20 whether they expected her to run again. Five said no, two called it a coin flip, and only one predicted a campaign. That is a rough scorecard for a politician who just two years ago ran as her party’s presidential nominee and lost the White House to President Trump.

The sample size is small, just eight people, and some of them may personally prefer she stay out of the race. Still, the pattern lines up with other reporting pointing the same direction, and it comes from people who worked directly for her.

Donors Still Angry Over The 2024 Loss

Many big-money Democratic donors remain furious about Harris’s 2024 defeat and do not want to back her again, Axios reported. Donor Reid Hoffman said Harris would face a “very challenging path” if she ran in 2028. Some of those same donors are now looking at Wes Moore and Gavin Newsom as fresher options for the party.

No one has published exact dollar figures showing money moving away from Harris and toward her potential rivals. But when the people who write the biggest checks start shopping around, that is a real warning sign for any candidate hoping to clear a crowded primary field.

Harris Insists She Has Not Decided

Harris herself has not ruled out a run. At a Michigan NAACP event she said, “I have not decided if I’m going to run again,” adding that she believes “’28 won’t matter if we don’t get through ’26”. She has kept a national profile, campaigning for House candidates and traveling to battleground states while she weighs her options.

Polling cited in press coverage still shows Harris leading other potential Democratic contenders, with especially strong support among Black voters. That gives her camp a counterargument against the doubters: if she is this unpopular with her own party insiders, why does she keep topping early primary polls?

Either way, the picture Democrats are stuck with is messy. Their last nominee cannot get a clear vote of confidence from her own husband or her own former staff, yet she refuses to step aside and clear the field. That is not strength. It is a party without a settled leader, stuck guessing about 2028 while President Trump governs with a mandate voters actually gave him.
