According to Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo, a new idea would let illegal immigrants benefit from a universal basic income.

According to the Harris County Democrats’ Uplift Harris pilot program, 1,500 families could each get $500 per month for 18 months. This would come out of $20.5 million in American Rescue Plan Act monies.
On Tuesday, when the scheme was put to a vote, proponent Hidalgo argued in favor of compensating both low-income residents and “the unlawful community.”
She said they intend to choose the ten most impoverished neighborhoods.
Can those without legal status apply? They’ll do so if their county attorney decides they can. They will not if the county’s attorney decides they are unable to do so.
They can, according to what she was informed, Hidalgo said. She also reacted angrily to Adrian Garcia, the county commissioner for Harris County, for what she saw as his unfair actions.

Hidalgo responded by saying the commissioner seemed to enjoy interrupting the women. She asked that he let her continue and allow the director to continue.
She proceeded by saying he should just vote against it if his wish is to draw out proceedings. She then stated everyone is aware of his feud with some people.

The universal basic income scheme would target those in high-poverty zip areas who make less than 200% of the federal poverty level. If accepted, it would start in the autumn.
Hidalgo Makes Unreasonable Demands
Hidalgo later criticized the program’s detractors during the hearing and demanded they be “truthful” about their objections.
She said everyone should be open and honest in their discussions. They’re currently discussing how much money goes to help the poor. She went on to say she felt that the money which is allocated to the district’s attorney should rather be spent on the poor.
