Ukraine Launches Massive Counterattack Against Russia

The war in Ukraine has been going on since February 24 when Russia invaded on the eastern edge of the country.

Since that time, millions of Ukrainian refugees have fled. The estimated death count in troops is Ukraine with 35,000 killed in action. With Russia, the estimation is 50,000 killed in action.

Over 5,000 Ukrainian civilians have also been estimated killed in the conflict with more than 7,000 injured.

So far, neither side has been able to shift the tide of the war definitively in its favor, but that’s now changing with a massive new Ukrainian counterattack.

Ukraine’s Comeback

In the last 72 hours, the Ukrainian military has shown its strength, advancing against Russian troops by expelling them and reclaiming their territory in Kharkiv.

Russian military personnel is reportedly fleeing in the middle of battle, abandoning equipment and everything else in the simple way of safeguarding their lives.

John Spencer, an expert on urban warfare, said Ukraine’s counterattack surpassed strategies used in World War II and is an epic and monumental undertaking.

Oksana Markarova, Ukraine’s ambassador to the U.S., said what Ukraine has now done in these 72 hours shows her country’s ability to win the war.

She also said it is not about choices, but about regaining the dignity and integrity of her country. Ukrainian troops will continue to advance until they regain all their territory.

There is one video circulating in which a Ukrainian is extremely grateful and thanking the military who saved him from a Russian-occupied area. Meanwhile, Volodymyr Zelensky, president of Ukraine, thanked his troops and recalled there is still a long way to go.

Zelensky also said the world is impressed by the turnaround his country is achieving with the fight against Russia and stressed nothing is easy, but victory is coming.

Five Day Blitz

Ukraine recaptured over 800 square kilometers of Russian-held territory between Sept. 4 to 9 and is continuing its onward onslaught. This has been partly aided by M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) supplied by the United States.

Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet with Xi Jinping, President of China, this week. They have been speaking by phone since June; this will be the first time they will meet in person.

As the war goes off the tracks, some are expecting a closer partnership between Russia and China, not to mention China’s crazy cousin, North Korea.

The Pentagon has previously warned of Russia’s search for reinforcements with North Korea. North Korea has a massive one-million-man standing army and numerous weapons its regime has built out of aid money it received and black market profits.

The Bottom Line

This war is far from over, but this turn in Ukraine’s favor is a dramatic development in this bloody, tragic, and horrible war.
