A lawyer for erstwhile President Trump issued a rebuke to the Justice Department for its opposition to the hiring of a special master to evaluate documents that were taken from Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate.
A longtime federal prosecutor named James Trusty told the host of Fox News’ Mark Levin that it is a “fair question” to wonder whether or not the Department of Justice is trying to cover up its inquiry.
This would be the inquiry into Trump’s processing of records after he left office amid the DOJ conducting a criminal investigation into the matter.

What Do They Have To Hide?
In a segment from this week’s episode of Life, Liberty, and Levin, he was quoted as saying the circumstances they find themselves in is a first in the annals of history.
He meant that in a very pejorative sense. To have this search warrant based on unsuccessful discussions with the National Archives, he supposes, permitted the state to effectively ransack the president’s residence and take whatever documents they wanted.
You might think in this day and age, when the attorney general is often making statements about the rule of law and the importance of transparency, we would be the first ones to agree it wouldn’t hurt to have another pair of eyes looking over our shoulders.
U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon granted Trump’s request for a special master, despite the objection of the Justice Department.
Since then, both sides have presented proposals for how to proceed, including nominations, access, and the quickness of the third-party review.
Issues Surrounding The Special Masters
The Department of Justice was instructed to stop using confiscation materials for its criminal probe while the special master evaluation is taking place. It has now stated that it will appeal the injunction granting an independent investigation.
The Justice Department also asked the court in Florida to initiate an emergency order to allow authorities to resume using classified material, due to worries over national security while the appeal is being played out.
Trusty stated that an “overriding theme” is the Department Of Justice trying to take on an outlook that it shouldn’t be second-guessed.
Likewise, he questioned what the agency could be afraid of. This comes as Trump maintains that he has done nothing wrong and is currently being unfairly targeted.

He stated that it would have been a far more respectful gesture for the department and this attorney general if they had turned around and said the following:
“You know what, it’s a fantastic idea to have a special master; we have absolutely nothing to hide. Let’s do that.”
However, that is not what the Department of Justice ended up doing. It is a battle that never ends.
