Republican Senators Ted Cruz and Bill Hagerty arrived in Israel on Sunday to assess the country’s destruction from the recent clash with Hamas.

The lawmakers, who are both members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, are also set to meet with the country’s leaders.

A Closer Look at the Visit to Israel

The senators will also travel to the southern cities of Israel that Hamas heavily struck. They will talk with Israeli leaders to reaffirm the GOP’s unwavering support for the security alliance with the United States.

The trip to Israel comes as the Democrat Party in Congress is growing more divided over America’s support for Israel.

On the other hand, far-left lawmakers have consistently called for Biden to freeze the security assistance to Israel. They also prompted him to consider giving sanctions to Israel due to their acts of launching defensive strikes on Hamas areas in the Gaza Strips.

Members of the so-called “Squad” such as Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib, and others attempt to force their co parties into adopting their anti-Israel stance.

This is a strategy that seems to be gaining attention, as there are a growing number of Democrats who are now raising the same sentiments. They seek a reassessment of the bipartisan U.S.-Israel security alliance.

Earlier this month, the huge divide in the Democrat Party about the issue on Israel stood in full display in the House. The party members basically voted to two bills – one that would sanction Hamas and the other to boost funding to Israel’s defense system.

Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense played an important role in blocking Hamas attacks even before they struck civilian areas.

Cruz planned a trip to Israel to “hear and see firsthand.”

Before he traveled to Israel, Cruz made a statement to the Washington Free Beacon. Cruz stated that he planned the trip to Israel to “hear and see firsthand” what Israel needs to protect itself. He added that this trip is also meant to show the international community that they stand “unequivocally with Israel.”

In addition to this, Cruz also scrutinized Democrats for their act of retreating from the U.S.-Israel alliance.

Cruz also mentioned that he set forth a petition for the Biden administration to immediately replenish supply for Israel’s Iron Dome missiles before his trip. According to Cruz, the Iron Dome “saved thousands of lives.”

However, Democrats resist this effort. Cruz also mentioned that this trip to Israel is a significant chance to study the recent conflict firsthand.

On the other hand, Hagerty stated that this trip to Israel would allow him to see in person what else can the United States do to strengthen our important partnership with Israel. This is particularly important during times when terrorists (such as Hamas and Hezbollah) and terror regimes in Syria and Iran are “making the Middle East more dangerous.”

Accordingly, Hagerty plans to speak with Israeli political leaders regarding the steps that the U.S. can take to enhance and boost the Abraham Accords.

Abraham Accords is a historic set of peace negotiations brokered by the former Trump administration. It was an agreement between Bahrain, Israel, and the United Arab Emirates.

Hagerty is the Republican senator who penned the recently filed legislation set to authorize emergency resupply of Israel’s Iron Dome system. He also spearheaded the effort to prevent the Biden administration from awarding Iran sanctions without congressional approval.
