Putin’s Russia Brings End of World Closer with Ukraine War, Doomsday Clock Shows

The war in Ukraine, which has raged for 11 months now, has brought the world closer to utter destruction. This is indicated by the “Doomsday Clock,” whose managers have moved by 10 seconds to show 90 seconds to midnight.

Moscow Not Letting Up in Ukraine, Despite Horrific Losses

In a bid to revive the former Soviet empire, subjugate Europe and Eurasia, and directly threaten the United States, on February 24, 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine as only the first stop on the sick Moscow dictator’s quest for global domination.

Plucky Ukraine has resisted fiercely, beating back Russians and making great use of top-notch weapons supplied to it by the United States and other western nations.

The official count of the Ukrainian government shows more than 123,000 regular Russian troops have been killed in combat; almost 20,000 Russian military equipment units have been destroyed after nearly 11 months of fighting.

Russia’s total losses may already be in the range of 300,000 – 350,000, according to some estimates.

Even so, Putin’s dictatorship is not letting up. It persists with meat-grinder offensives and plans to keep mobilizing civilians to throw them to die for Moscow’s long-lost imperial “greatness.”

With the Russians failing to overwhelm Ukraine, the possibility they may resort to using nuclear weapons in some way – in a demonstration, battlefield attack, or an attack on one or more Western and NATO-alliance nations – has become more significant than ever.

That new reality has now been reflected by the scientists managing the so-called Doomsday Clock, a symbolic device warning about threats to humanity’s survival caused by man-made technology, including nuclear weapons.

The Doomsday Clock was established by The Bulletin of Nuclear Scientists back in 1947 by a team involved in the Manhattan Project to create the world’s first atomic bomb.

The Bulletin is an independent nonprofit managed by some of the top global scientists.

Putin, Russians Have Put World at ‘Terrible Risk’

Its managers have now moved the Doomsday Clock the closest to a global man-made disaster that it has been, due to the “thinly veiled threats” from Russia that it would resort to nuclear weapons.

Since 2020, the Doomsday Clock was at 100 seconds to midnight, but Moscow’s threats and actions have now moved it 10 seconds ahead.

The Atomic Scientists’ Bulletin warned there was a “terrible risk” of an escalation of the Russian war against Ukraine, which could happen through an “accident, intention, or miscalculation.”

It also said there was a “high” possibility that Putin’s military adventure may get out of “anyone’s control.”

Aside from the current Russian aggression in Ukraine, the scientists insisted Russia and the United States should restart their negotiations to extend the last existing nuclear weapons agreement between them, which is set to expire in February 2026.

The Doomsday Clock managers also raised the alarm over China’s buildup of its nuclear weapon stockpile, the ballistic missiles developed by the nuclear-armed dictatorship of North Korea, Iran’s growing ability to enrich uranium to build nukes, plus India’s own nuclear arsenal development.

The COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, plus the spreading of disinformation and destructive technology, also influenced the decision to move the clock forward.
