President Biden is reportedly open to narrowing who qualifies for the next round of COVID stimulus checks after critics from his own party suggested that the President has already broken his pledge to distribute $2,000 stimulus checks.
On Monday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer introduced a joint budget resolution. Said reconciliation process would allow them to pass President Biden’s stimulus package without requiring support from the Republican party.
However, after the joint budget resolution, the news broke that President Biden is open to narrowing who will qualify for the next round of stimulus checks.

According to the Washington Post report, Biden has publicly expressed his willingness to negotiate the stimulus checks, which under Biden administration’s current plan, would begin to diminish at $75,000 for individuals and couples making $150,000 a year.
In addition to this, Biden also aimed to provide $1,450 for every adult and child under that threshold, on top of the $600 per adult and child budget approved by Congress in December.
Moreover, the report also stated that one proposal that senior Democrats discussed includes lowering the threshold for the payments. Two people who granted anonymity to discuss the internal planning stated that they are planning to lower the threshold for payments “to begin phasing out above $50,000 for single taxpayers, $75,000 for people who file as the heads of households, and $100,000 for married couples.” However, the sources stressed that although these topics were discussed, they are still fluid, and the legislation has not yet been finalized.

Last month, CNBC reported that President Biden revealed the $1.9 Trillion package on January 1. This includes an additional stimulus payment of $1,400 to payment taxpayers and their dependents. At that time, the incoming president stated that the payments would top off the second round of $600 stimulus checks, which were agreed upon at the end of 2020. According to him, this will bring the total amount to $2,000 per person.
However, some critics of Biden’s new COVID-19 plan, including far-left Rep. Alexandria-Ocasio Cortez (D-NY), stated that the Democratic party needs to fulfill the pledge they made during the campaign period and provide the full $2,000 payment.
Last month, during the campaign period for the Senate runoffs in Georgia, Biden vowed to send $2,000 stimulus payments “immediately” to Americans if the two Democrat Senatorial candidates win the election, which they did the following day.

President Biden is also currently facing a backlash for saying that the stimulus checks would “go out the door immediately,” when Schumer indicated that the distribution of which might not happen until the middle of March, which would be at least six months into the Biden administration.
Meanwhile, a White House spokeswoman, Rosemary G. Boeglin, said in a statement that, “The President remains committed to finishing the job on delivering $2,000 in direct relief to Americans who are struggling to make ends meet during this crisis.”
