Impeachment of Trump Might Be Introduced in the House on Monday

Articles of impeachment might be filed against President Trump by Democrats on Monday, as the Democrats have at least 180 co-sponsors for the articles of impeachment that might be filed against Trump.

In order to remove Trump from office, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi even requested Vice President Pence to use to the 25th Amendment, saying that the House will take action if President Trump does not resign. However, the Vice President reportedly rejected such a call.

After an hour-long phone call with Democrats concerning the articles of Impeachment, Pelosi said in a statement last Saturday, “It is the hope of members that the president will immediately resign.” She continued and stated, “but if he does not, I have instructed the Rules Committee to be prepared.”

Meanwhile, Representative Ted Lieu (D-CA) wrote on Saturday, “UPDATE to the update: We’ve just hit 180 cosponsors of the Article of Impeachment drafted by Rep @davidcicilline, @RepRaskin, me and @HouseJudiciary staff. We will introduce the Article of Impeachment this Monday during the House’s pro forma session.”

Although Trump is less likely to be impeached before he is removed from office on January 20, he could never run again for president if he will be impeached. This will deprive him of the chance to run in the 2024 election, a possibility that he repeatedly hinted at.

Meanwhile, there are some Republicans that also want the President gone. For instance, Representative Adam Kinzinger of Illinois has called for Trump to be impeached from his seat through the 25th Amendment. Said amendment allows the Cabinet to remove the President under extraordinary circumstances with the support of the majority of both the House and the Senate. 

In the Senate, on the other hand, Senator Ben Sasse said he would “definitely consider” the articles of impeachment as well if they pass it in the House. However, the first Republican to call on President Trump to resign is moderate senator Sen. Lisa Murkowski. 

In an interview with the Anchorage Daily News, “I want him to resign. I want him out. He has caused enough damage.” She continued and said, “I think he should leave. He said he’s not going to show up. He’s not going to appear at the inauguration. He hasn’t been focused on what is going on with COVID.”

Despite these Republicans who are pushing the articles of impeachment. Some are against it.

On Friday, seven Republicans on the House wrote a letter to Biden requesting him to formally ask Pelosi to stop the push to impeach President Trump after the riot that happened last Wednesday in the Capitol building. 

There are also Republican lawmakers who were in favor of certifying the electoral college votes on January 6, Ken Buck (R-CO), Tom McClintock (R-CA), Thomas Massie (R-MA), Chip Roy (R-MD), Kelly Armstong (R-ND), Nancy Mace (R-NC), and Mike Gallagher (R-WI). These Representatives also argued that the impeachment option written in the Constitution was never meant to be used absent “adequate investigation and congressional hearings.”

In the letter that was sent to President-elect Biden, the seven Republican representatives argued that under the present circumstances, pushing for the impeachment of Trump would be simply too rushed. They wrote, “This impeachment would undermine your priority of unifying Americans, and would be a further distraction to our nation at a time when millions of our fellow citizens are hurting because of the pandemic and the economic fallout.”

The lawmakers wrote, “We respectfully urge you to encourage Speaker Pelosi to set aside this partisan effort immediately.”
