The Democratic Presidential nominee, Joe Biden, told a news reporter that voters do not deserve to know whether or not he will pack the Supreme Court in case he wins the upcoming election.
Biden gave this statement on Friday to a local news reporter. The reporter was heard asking Biden about packing the courts. He said he knows the Biden said he would not going to answer the question about packing the courts until after the election. However, the reporter insisted on and said that it is the number one question that the viewers have asked the reporter in the past couple of days.
This question was answered by Biden in a bad light saying, “Well, you’ve been asked by the viewers who are probably Republicans who don’t want me continuing to talk about what they’re doing to the court right now,”
To which the reporter said, “Well sir, don’t the voters deserve to know…”
“No, they don’t,” Biden responded.
The Democratic nominees, Biden and Harris, both refused to state their side on whether or not they support packing.
Packing the courts has been a controversial issue wherein, in recent polls, only 34% of Americans support it. This issue arose weeks after the death of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
Biden also said that people would know his opinion about court-packing once the election is over. He followed up with a statement saying that the moment he answers that question, the headlines in all of the new papers will be about it other than focusing on other issues that are happening now.
Meanwhile, Alexander Burns, a New York Times reporter, said in a podcast that Kamala Harris told him last year that she was “absolutely open” to the idea of packing the Supreme Court.
Burns said that the senator told him in an interview that she was open to court-packing.
However, this week, when Harris was asked about the issue, she made almost the same statement as Joe Biden by saying, “The voters need to first decide who’s the next President of the United States. Period.”
Kamala Harris, just like Biden, dodged the question about court-packing.
This dodging was also observed in the vice presidential debate when Vice President Mike Pence asked her about her opinion on the issue of packing the Court. However, instead of directly answering the question, the democrat nominee went on sidestepping the question by saying a series of facts that do not address the issue.
She went on by saying that she sat at the Senate Judiciary Committee and that she had witnessed appointments to the federal courts, district courts, and Court of appeals. And that out of the 50 people with whom President Trump appointed, not one of them is Black.
The new poll that was lately released showed that voters do not support packing. According to the new survey, only 1 in 3 American voters favors the democratic proposal to expand the Supreme Court to give way to the liberal majority.
